• Recovery & Rebuilding Levy

- In order to recover and rebuild our people's livelihoods without risking the survival of the business (which remains in a vulnerable state, trading in a volatile and unpredictable market) we have implemented a Recovery & Rebuilding Levy of R115.00 per person per day. This will go directly and exclusively to our staff. Almost all businesses have been negatively impacted by COVID-19 in some way or another, but ours and our industries have regrettably been at the forefront. To ensure survival so we can carry on preserving & protecting these wilderness areas and keep delivering enriching experiences to our guest, we had to drastically reduce one of our largest cost components

- our payroll. During this calendar year, our staff will earn on average just 55% of their 2019 income. This has, and will continue to have, a lasting devastating impact on them, their families, and their communities.

Safaris

A safari is a sociable experience by its very nature. Guests from all backgrounds tend to mix easily when you inevitably end up in friendly competition to spot an animal first and share the thrill when you do. But you also have the option of a private guide and vehicle if you prefer the freedom to set your own pace and decide what you’d like to focus on.

The Wild Life

Africa has been called the greatest show on earth, and Lion Sands presents a safari that plays out like a highlights reel. Our reserve conserves 5 000ha (12 500ac) of a habitat that is home to the highest and most diverse concentration of wildlife in the southern hemisphere. You will see all of Africa’s iconic species – lion leopard, rhino, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, and zebra – along with a supporting cast of no less intriguing 137 mammal species and over 450 varieties of bird. Our safaris present an adventure that is wild, and then some!

An Exclusive Experience

Being entirely private, Lion Sands offers you an intimate safari experience. With only six guests to a game viewer and exclusive traversing on our reserve, you’ll have minimal encounters with other people. Though compelling sightings do attract more attention, the number of vehicles here is also limited. This ensures the animals aren’t put under stress and you are able to spend more time with them, observing their natural behaviour. While you are out exploring, you will by no means be roughing it. Your game viewer has cushioned bucket seats, waterproof device holders, blankets and ponchos – and stops off in a scenic spot for drinks and snacks.

Safari Stops

As one of Lion Sands’ many tailor-made experiences, our safari stops are something truly special. Between the action, they are pauses to simply appreciate being in the bush and in the moment. An exciting morning breaks for hot beverages – with sneaky tots of Amarula liqueur, if you like – and freshly-baked treats, as the animals begin to stir. Your afternoon winds down with sundowners and nibbles in a surprise location, which your field guide has found to show off what is possibly the day’s most epic event – an African sunset.

Your MORE Guides

Our safaris bring you face-to-face with the natural world, but what would they be without your field guide and tracker who know how to heighten the thrill of the search? All are FGASA-qualified (some by our own NJ MORE Field Guide College), and highly-skilled at leading safaris in Big Five territories and tailoring them to your personal interests. But more than that, they are selected for their palpable love of the world’s last wild places and their ability to inspire this in you – putting them in a league of their own. They are your scouts, teachers, translators and – given how much time you spend with them – friends, so your affinity with your guiding team is essential.

Walking Safaris

These are our after-breakfast walks on the wild side. For those who wish to experience the bush, not just observe it, there is no better guided excursion. You are dropped in the thick of things and all five senses engage… Feel the scrub crunch beneath your feet, touch a velvety acacia seed pod, hear the crack of a branch indicating you are not alone, and spot the game appear just metres off – exhilarating! This is also a wonderful opportunity to encounter the smaller creatures, often missed on safari vehicles, and to discover more about the reserve’s plants – many with fascinating medicinal properties and traditional uses.

The Best of Both Worlds

Lion Sands Game Reserve is unique, being the only private sanctuary rooted in both the Sabi Sand Game Reserve and Kruger National Park. The 50km (31mi) border between these great wildernesses is unfenced, and only the Sabie River separates our Sabi and Kruger regions. The wildlife roams freely between them, and at Lion Sands we see the passage of an unparalleled number and diversity of species. They are non-migratory, so you are guaranteed an exceptional safari, year-round – influenced by season, rather than location. Autumn and winter are best for spotting game though the sparse bush, and spring and summer for seeing newborns and exotic bird species. Our reserve is also renowned for the quality of its leopard viewing – the most elusive of predators.

An African Safari – just its mention inspires something-out-of-a-movie imaginings – sets the scene for any number of experiences to play out. From weddings with elephants on the guest list, to photography expeditions that take you within a hair’s breadth of the wildlife – whatever your special interest or request, we will create a bespoke safari for you to realise your own dream.

Of course this includes luxury accommodation in a captivating location, sincere and attentive hospitality and excellent food, all wrapped up by seamless logistics. And with our years of experience, you can trust us to pull it off.

Weddings

The magic of this immemorial land cannot be underestimated when the matters at hand are love and devotion. Embark on the adventure of a lifetime and celebrate your union where forever began. We will plan your secret elopement/ intimate nuptials/roaring celebration – down to the last wildly-romantic detail. This leaves you with time to focus on each other, spend with family and friends, and take it all in…

Bird Watching

Your FGASA-accredited field guide has a vast knowledge of the reserve and its inhabitants, and will gladly tailor a safari to your birding interest. South Africa’s resident species number over 850 and with Lion Sands home to 450 of those, including the rare southern ground hornbill, the birdwatching here is spectacular! And there’s always a spare pair of binocs on the vehicle, so no need to panic if you’ve left yours behind.

Photography

We understand that photographers need time and independence, and our safaris offering exclusive traversing across the reserve are ideal. Your experienced field guide will get you up close for the perfect shot and the vehicle caters for your interest, too with bucket seats and compartments for your equipment. Back at River Lodge, the Creative Lab is available for you to edit and print your work onto canvas.

Spa & Wellness

In our experience, being well taken care of inspires a fundamental sense of well-being. And how better to indulge than with luxurious accommodation, wholesome food, and spa therapies? We favour Africology products, instilled with the belief that self-care brings balance. So with our massages, wraps and facials, we promise a wellness experience to rejuvenate your body, quiet your mind, and revitalise your spirit.

Food & Wine

From boma feasts to safari refreshment stops, dining promises to be a highlight – for all our guests, with any dietary requirement, including kosher, catered for. Our chefs transform local recipes into contemporary dishes, giving you a taste for Southern Africa. Paired with premium wines from the Cape, dining becomes an experience. Our wine tastings are also a favourite of connoisseurs and dabblers, alike.
