A Closer Look
Our wilderness spa allows you to slip away for a while and re-emerge centered and rejuvenated
Always an adventure, our Mack & Madi kids’ programme keeps curious youngsters busy (and parents relaxed)
Dining at Ivory can turn into an exploration, with a table laid out wherever you wish, and dishes and wines introducing you to new flavours
We freshly prepare Kosher cuisine and cater for any dietary requirement, so that all of our guests can enjoy every treat a stay here has to offer
And when it’s time to depart, our MORE Gallery retails rare items and art for you to take home and treasure a piece of South Africa
As a guest of Ivory Lodge, you have the option of elevating your safari to a million-star experience with a night in our Chalkley or Kingston Treehouse.
The safaris take place either in the morning or late afternoon moving into the early evening. The reason for this is that it is when the wildlife are most active due to the temperatures being the most moderate. It is also important to note that this area does not get affected by a migration of species which means that the game viewing is consistently good all year round and the only change in seasons is really to the surrounding landscape and daily temperatures.
Fitness & Exercise
Although you are outdoors a large portion of the day one does not have the opportunity to do any strenuous exercise such as running as in this environment runners would be too great a temptation for all of those very opportunistic predators! Although we do offer some incredible wildlife walks we have created a workout gym for those of you who like to get in a little more of a workout to keep in shape.
The Spa at Lion Sands is a Tranquil retreat, realigning your body with nature, and its connectedness to the divine. Our focus is on cutting edge spa therapies where holisms are embraced. Bespoke in our approach - we listen to you and your body’s need and guide accordingly Never neglecting our sense of luxury & opulence, we continue to respect our environment.
We have hosted both intimate and larger safari weddings at our private lodges, so we know what a memorable setting they can be for that special occasion. If you are considering getting married with us, please make contact so that we can start planning and tailoring the event early, as we know that each occasion is unique in its requirements. You can either come meet with us at the lodge, or we can communicate via telephone to start sculpting the perfect program of events for your consideration.
Follow your heart to the bush. Whether it’s your first breakaway as a couple or your second honeymoon, you want it to be an unforgettable experience. Romantic, idyllic, private and secluded – Lion Sands, out of all our Lodges, must be the most idyllic setting to celebrate the start of a new life together or to fall in love all over again. The suites are private, spacious, luxurious, have incredible vistas over the river so game viewing or just being together can be done from your own viewing deck, they have outdoor showers and their own private plunge pools, a complete haven to just be.

“The Treehouses at Lion Sands Game Reserve are as wild as Mother Nature could wish… here are unobstructed bush views, sweet African air and walk-on appearances by some of the continent’s most impressive animals.” – Lisa Grainger, Condé Nast Traveller
A Million-Star Experience
Our Treehouses set you in the middle of big landscapes, globed by even bigger skies, their lights twinkling down to the horizon. Below, the stillness is punctuated by animals’ whistles, huffs, and growls… carried on the wind.
There are few such experiences left on earth that capture the romance of the untamed and untainted.
Arrive at sunset to a picnic, spend the dusk hours spotting wildlife out in the bush, and fall asleep counting shooting stars.
This is not simply a sleep out – this is an adventure with Africa, one-on-one.
What You Need to Know
Rest assured, each Lion Sands Treehouse has been securely constructed above the ground, where the animals remain at a safe and comfortable distance.
Your field guide will provide a full orientation before he departs, but is always on call via radio until he collects you the next morning, after sunrise and a good breakfast.
A night in a Treehouse is booked in conjunction with your lodge accommodation. You don’t check out of your suite – it’s still yours, ready for your return.
This experience is charged for at R3 950 per person sharing per night, over and above the lodge rate
You’ll pack a stay-over bag with the essentials, leaving the rest of your belongings safe back at the lodge
Located at Lion Sands Sabi Sand, for guests of Ivory Lodge and River Lodge
The Original Hideout
The treehouse has been built on the site where our ancestor, Guy Aubrey Chalkley made camp in a centuries-old leadwood tree. Since, it has been taken to an altogether different level of comfort. But the absence of Wi-Fi and light by the soft glow of lanterns enhance a very real experience of Africa.

Opening On to Africa
Built beyond an outcrop of boulders, across a small drawbridge, Kingston is a couple or family’s private vantage over Africa, opening out in front of you. Sheltered by its wood and glass structure, you can savour this faraway experience in comfort – complete with feather beds and a hot shower.
Located at Lion Sands Kruger Park, for guests of Tinga Lodge and Narina Lodge
At the River’s Edge
Tinyeleti (meaning ‘many stars’) is a dreamy escape between the heavens and earth for couples and families, alike. This location sees the passage of many animals, drawn to the water in the coolness of early evening and morning. Watch on from your bed, shower, or breakfast table…
A safari is a sociable experience by its very nature. Guests from all backgrounds tend to mix easily when you inevitably end up in friendly competition to spot an animal first and share the thrill when you do. But you also have the option of a private guide and vehicle if you prefer the freedom to set your own pace and decide what you’d like to focus on.
The Wild Life
Africa has been called the greatest show on earth, and Lion Sands presents a safari that plays out like a highlights reel. Our reserve conserves 5 000ha (12 500ac) of a habitat that is home to the highest and most diverse concentration of wildlife in the southern hemisphere. You will see all of Africa’s iconic species – lion leopard, rhino, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, and zebra – along with a supporting cast of no less intriguing 137 mammal species and over 450 varieties of bird. Our safaris present an adventure that is wild, and then some!
An Exclusive Experience
Being entirely private, Lion Sands offers you an intimate safari experience. With only six guests to a game viewer and exclusive traversing on our reserve, you’ll have minimal encounters with other people. Though compelling sightings do attract more attention, the number of vehicles here is also limited. This ensures the animals aren’t put under stress and you are able to spend more time with them, observing their natural behaviour. While you are out exploring, you will by no means be roughing it. Your game viewer has cushioned bucket seats, waterproof device holders, blankets and ponchos – and stops off in a scenic spot for drinks and snacks.
As one of Lion Sands’ many tailor-made experiences, our safari stops are something truly special. Between the action, they are pauses to simply appreciate being in the bush and in the moment. An exciting morning breaks for hot beverages – with sneaky tots of Amarula liqueur, if you like – and freshly-baked treats, as the animals begin to stir. Your afternoon winds down with sundowners and nibbles in a surprise location, which your field guide has found to show off what is possibly the day’s most epic event – an African sunset.
Your MORE Guides
Our safaris bring you face-to-face with the natural world, but what would they be without your field guide and tracker who know how to heighten the thrill of the search? All are FGASA-qualified (some by our own NJ MORE Field Guide College), and highly-skilled at leading safaris in Big Five territories and tailoring them to your personal interests. But more than that, they are selected for their palpable love of the world’s last wild places and their ability to inspire this in you – putting them in a league of their own. They are your scouts, teachers, translators and – given how much time you spend with them – friends, so your affinity with your guiding team is essential.
These are our after-breakfast walks on the wild side. For those who wish to experience the bush, not just observe it, there is no better guided excursion. You are dropped in the thick of things and all five senses engage… Feel the scrub crunch beneath your feet, touch a velvety acacia seed pod, hear the crack of a branch indicating you are not alone, and spot the game appear just metres off – exhilarating! This is also a wonderful opportunity to encounter the smaller creatures, often missed on safari vehicles, and to discover more about the reserve’s plants – many with fascinating medicinal properties and traditional uses.
The Best of Both Worlds
Lion Sands Game Reserve is unique, being the only private sanctuary rooted in both the Sabi Sand Game Reserve and Kruger National Park. The 50km (31mi) border between these great wildernesses is unfenced, and only the Sabie River separates our Sabi and Kruger regions. The wildlife roams freely between them, and at Lion Sands we see the passage of an unparalleled number and diversity of species. They are non-migratory, so you are guaranteed an exceptional safari, year-round – influenced by season, rather than location. Autumn and winter are best for spotting game though the sparse bush, and spring and summer for seeing newborns and exotic bird species. Our reserve is also renowned for the quality of its leopard viewing – the most elusive of predators.
An African Safari – just its mention inspires something-out-of-a-movie imaginings – sets the scene for any number of experiences to play out. From weddings with elephants on the guest list, to photography expeditions that take you within a hair’s breadth of the wildlife – whatever your special interest or request, we will create a bespoke safari for you to realise your own dream.
Of course this includes luxury accommodation in a captivating location, sincere and attentive hospitality and excellent food, all wrapped up by seamless logistics. And with our years of experience, you can trust us to pull it off.
The magic of this immemorial land cannot be underestimated when the matters at hand are love and devotion. Embark on the adventure of a lifetime and celebrate your union where forever began. We will plan your secret elopement/ intimate nuptials/roaring celebration – down to the last wildly-romantic detail. This leaves you with time to focus on each other, spend with family and friends, and take it all in…
Your FGASA-accredited field guide has a vast knowledge of the reserve and its inhabitants, and will gladly tailor a safari to your birding interest. South Africa’s resident species number over 850 and with Lion Sands home to 450 of those, including the rare southern ground hornbill, the birdwatching here is spectacular! And there’s always a spare pair of binocs on the vehicle, so no need to panic if you’ve left yours behind.
We understand that photographers need time and independence, and our safaris offering exclusive traversing across the reserve are ideal. Your experienced field guide will get you up close for the perfect shot and the vehicle caters for your interest, too with bucket seats and compartments for your equipment. Back at River Lodge, the Creative Lab is available for you to edit and print your work onto canvas.
